A coalition of over 30 Catholic organizations came together to promote vaccine acceptance. It is good for everyone to accept the vaccine. Get the shot. The problem is that there are not enough shots for everyone – yet. Consequently, we need to promote the equitable distribution of the vaccine here in the United States and everywhere on earth.
For this to happen, we will need to advocate for vaccine acceptance and equity – to our family and friends, within our neighborhoods, nationally and internationally. This is a moment when humanity needs to come together for one another. In a word, this is truly a “catholic” moment.
Yet, there will be hesitancy, resistance, and even hostility towards universal vaccination as well as selfishness and greed. Relying on the Spirit, the insights of moral theology, and Catholic spirituality, we can understand “the good” offered to us by the vaccine and the unprecedented opportunity our generation has for “an act of charity and solidarity.”
Susan Gunn and Don McCrabb will lead the webinar by exploring what we have heard and seen, the clear call of the Gospel (based on Fratelli Tutti), and the many ways we can act – individually, as a community of mission, and collectively employing “Passover’s practical stewardship.”
Susan Gunn is the director of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, the justice and peace advocacy office in Washington, D.C. and at the United Nations, representing Maryknoll missioners serving poor and marginalized communities in 26 countries around the world. Don McCrabb, Executive Director of USCMA, serves as the convenor of the Steering Committee for the coalition.
